How to convert PDF to dark mode

Three steps in Chrome. The extension remembers your settings for next time.

Step 1

Open the extension

Click the Convert PDF Dark Mode icon next to the address bar. The converter opens in its own tab. If the icon is hidden, pin it from the puzzle menu once.

Step 2

Choose a theme and add a file

Pick one of four themes and what should happen to images. Then drag the document into the field or choose it from a folder. It can be up to 100 MB.

Step 3

Open or save the dark PDF

Pages are converted one by one while you watch the progress. Open the copy in Chrome or save it to your computer. The copy gets its own name, so the original is never replaced.

Four themes for your dark mode PDF

Pick a theme before you convert. Each has a different background and text color. Colored text keeps its hue and only changes brightness, so a red warning is still red.

Classic Dark
One page in the Classic Dark theme
Neutral charcoal with soft gray text, close to a code editor's default look.
Warm Dark
One page in the Warm Dark theme
Warm charcoal with cream text, a calmer look for long documents.
Cool Dark
One page in the Cool Dark theme
Blue-gray with cool white text, crisp and clear.
Soft Dark
One page in the Soft Dark theme
Gray-green with beige text and the lowest contrast of the four.

Choose what happens to images

A typical invert PDF colors Chrome extension flips images too, so a blue sky turns orange. Here they have their own setting with three options.

Original
A page with a photo and a diagram in the Original option
Images keep their original colors, which suits photos and color charts. This is the default.
Dim
A page with a photo and a diagram in the Dim option
Images are toned down, so they don't stand out on the page. Photos still look natural.
Apply theme
A page with a photo and a diagram in the Apply theme option
Images are recolored with the theme, like the page itself. This works well for diagrams on white, screenshots and scanned pages.

Questions about PDF dark mode

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. This dark PDF Chrome extension converts the file in a tab on your computer and never sends it anywhere.

Can I still copy text after converting?

Yes. Text is not turned into an image, so search, selection and copying work as before. Code samples paste as plain text.

Is this a PDF reader with dark mode?

No. A dark PDF reader only changes what you see on the screen, while the document underneath remains white. This PDF dark mode converter puts the new colors into a copy, so you don't need a special viewer at all.

Is PDF night mode something different?

No, it is another name for the same thing. The extension saves your file as a night mode PDF that opens the same way in every app.

How to invert PDF colors without changing photos?

Choose Original under Images before you add the file. The page gets the theme colors, and photos keep theirs.

How large can the file be?

Up to 100 MB. Long documents are converted page by page. You can stop at any moment with the cross next to the file name.

What about scanned documents?

A scan is one image per page. Choose Dim or Apply theme, and the scan is converted too. With Original, the extension tells you the document has only images.

Can I change a PDF to dark mode on my phone?

The extension runs in Chrome on a computer. Convert it there, then send the copy to your phone, and it opens in any app with the same colors.

Which files can't be converted?

Password-protected and damaged files. The extension shows the reason right away.
